By William M. Kunstier September 13th marked the 20th anniversary of the retaking of D-Yard at the Attica State Correctional Facility—a maximum-security penitentiary in upstate New York—by the authorities. The military assault on the yard by an army of state troopers, correction officers and sheriff’s deputies resulted in the deaths of 33 inmates and 10 hostages, as well as severe injuries to scores of other prisoners. Many died from loss of blood or lack of adequate medical attention because of the state’s failure to provide enough physicians, nurses and plasma for the anticipated number of casualties. Following the attack, inmates…

It now heads to the floor, where members may take it up as early as this weekend before it’s potentially sent to the governor’s desk. Nguyen told committee members that she first learned about the benefits of psychedelics from…
The California Assembly has passed a bill to legalize marijuana cafes, allowing dispensaries to offer non-cannabis food and drinks at their location if they receive local approval. The legislation from Assemblymember Matt Haney (D) cleared the chamber in a 59-9 vote on Wednesday and now heads to the Senate for consideration. “The legal cannabis industry is struggling,” Haney said on the floor. “Issues like an over-saturation, high taxes and thriving black market are hurting cannabis businesses who follow the rules and pay taxes.” Our Cannabis Cafe bill just flew off the Assembly floor with bipartisan support. California’s small cannabis businesses…

The governor of Colorado has signed a bill into law that would allow online marijuana sales. About a month after the measure from Reps. William Lindstedt (D), Said Sharbini (D) and Robert Rodriguez (D) cleared the legislature, Gov. Jared Polis (D) gave it final approval on Thursday. It strikes language from existing statute that explicitly prohibits cannabis from being sold on the internet, while adding regulations to provide for online commerce. Adults 21 and older will still need to physically pick up the marijuana products from the retailer, but they can browse and electronically purchase cannabis online ahead of visiting…
“If there’s something we could do, and if you’re serious about pushing social equity, let’s get these things across the finish line.” By Sophie Nieto-Muñoz, New Jersey Monitor The agency overseeing New Jersey’s marijuana market made a move Thursday that aims to increase the number of cannabis businesses run by people with prior convictions for marijuana offenses or who live in economically disadvantaged parts of the state. For one year starting September 27, the Cannabis Regulatory Commission will accept requests for certain licenses—wholesaler, distributor, and delivery service class licenses—only from so-called social equity applicants, the commission decided at its Thursday…
Attorneys for President Joe Biden’s son reportedly told Justice Department officials that a recent federal court ruling on gun rights for people who use marijuana should invalidate any charges related to allegations that he lied about his drug use on a federal firearms purchase form. As federal prosecutors investigate the 2018 handgun purchase, which took place at a time when Hunter Biden disclosed that he was a regular user of crack cocaine, his attorneys are challenging the idea that he could be effectively prosecuted for allegedly saying that he was not an unlawful user of drugs when he filled out…
Born to humble beginnings in Venice Beach, Blake Johnson grew up in one of the most vibrant, eclectic environments that could shape a young man. In an area of Southern California where surfing, skateboarding, and cannabis pervade the culture, it’s no surprise that he was drawn to the few skateparks around his neighborhood at a young age. When discussing Venice skateboarding, it’s mandatory to mention legends such as Jay Adams, Eric Dressen, and Natas Kaupas. These pioneers set the precedent of what it meant to be a professional skateboarder in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Reaching that level is hard enough;…
