“Cities and counties are eager to see a statewide policy that balances accountability and treatment, and I believe we can produce a bipartisan bill that does just that.” By Brett Davis, The Center Square Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee (D) announced Tuesday afternoon that he will call a special legislative session to begin on May 16 to pass a new drug possession law, something lawmakers failed to do during the 105-day regular session that ended on April 23. “My office and I have been meeting with legislators from all four caucuses and I am very optimistic about reaching an agreement…
Ohio lawmakers have forfeited an opportunity to enact an activist-led marijuana legalization proposal, letting a statutory deadline to take up the issue by Wednesday lapse and instead leaving it to advocates to pick up where they left off on signature gathering to place the measure on the ballot. Ohio’s secretary of state submitted the reform legislation to lawmakers in January, giving them four months to consider legalizing cannabis before an election law was triggered that now frees up advocates to continue petitioning to put the reform directly before voters. The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CTRMLA) initially worked to…
National Basketball Association (NBA) players will not be able to promote marijuana companies under a new collective bargaining agreement, contrary to early reports about the deal with the players union, a new summary document shows. But the league will remove drug testing requirements for THC, while allowing players to passively invest in the industry. The document stipulates that while players “may promote a company that makes products containing CBD,” they will “continue to be prohibited from promoting marijuana companies.” In other words, don’t expect to see Kevin Durant coming out with his own line of intoxicating cannabis products any time…
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has finalized a rule to amend its drug testing policy in a way that could have significant implications for truckers, commercial drivers, pilots and other federally regulated transit workers who use marijuana off the job. In a notice published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, the department said that it has completed the rulemaking process for the policy change, which would allow oral saliva drug testing as an alternative to urine-based tests. Advocates and experts view as urine tests as problematic in part because THC metabolites can show up for weeks or months after…
Colorado lawmakers have sent a bill to the governor to create a regulatory framework for legal psychedelics under a voter-approved initiative. The legislation from Senate President Steve Fenberg (D) passed both chambers last month, and the Senate concurred with House amendments on Tuesday in a 32-3 vote and then repassed the final measure by a tally of 24-11, clearing its path to Gov. Jared Polis’s (D) desk. Since being introduced last month, the measure has moved quickly as lawmakers worked to enact it before the end of the legislative session on Saturday. Overall, the bill seeks to set up regulations…
Not many artists can continue to put out new music across multiple decades and remain relevant, but such is the case for Mark Anthony Mayrie—known professionally as esteemed reggae artist, Buju Banton. Alright friends. On this beautiful morning—the morning of Hall of Flowers—I wanted to drop a surprise Cop List detailing a few more highlights that surrounded our favorite day of the year before I get lost in the sauce and forget about ‘em. Lots of great drops happened on or around 4/20, and despite being in New York for the holiday and upstate now for the Emerald Cup judges retreat yesterday & Hall of Flowers today, I couldn’t let these gems fall by the wayside. While this one has several frequent flyers on it, it’s got several of my favorite picks…
If 4/20 is the day to go to Hippy Hill or Washington Square Park and blaze away in public, then May the 4th is the day to melt into the couch, hit the Puffco and trip out to sci-fi movies. While you could go with the Star Wars spirit of the day by firing up Disney+ and binging any number of trilogies–or all of them–Leafly’s list goes beyond George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away. The best sci-fi to watch high should expand your mind, but not be too long, complex, or heavy (sorry, Alien). Humor helps. We researched other lists,…
Mind & Matter is a monthly column by Nick Jikomes, PhD, Leafly’s Director of Science and Innovation.Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant cannabinoid found in cannabis, after THC. It’s commonly believed to be non-psychoactive, a myth arising from the fact that it’s non-intoxicating–it won’t get you high. Based on how it works in the brain, CBD can affect mood, which means it is psychoactive. But CBD is not a potent drug. Most of its scientifically documented effects are only observed when high doses are used. Are there any CBD products that can supply you with high enough doses to be useful,…
Both chambers of the Minnesota legislature have appointed bipartisan House and Senate conferees to negotiate a final deal on a marijuana legalization bill that can be sent to the governor to be signed into law. A total of 10 bicameral negotiators were selected to resolve differences between their companion legalization measures that cleared their respective chambers last week. The members will hold meetings to agree on the provisions of a reconciled bill, then send it to the House and Senate for final floor votes before the legislation can be sent to to Gov. Tim Walz (D). While both versions would…
