Lawmakers and government bodies across the U.S. are again noting—and in some cases openly celebrating—the unofficial marijuana holiday 4/20, with numerous posts touting past reform accomplishments and pledges to continue working to advance the issue. While Thursday is a time of celebration within the cannabis community, politicians have increasingly used it as a platform to advocate for more reform. That’s no different this year, and top congressional lawmakers are even speaking about the issue at a first-of-its-kind event inside the Capitol Building on the holiday. Officials at various stages of government are playing into the culture. The list of lawmakers…

4/20 is the only holiday I enjoy. Christmas hits me right in the swing of seasonal depression. Halloween was fun when I was younger, but now that I can wear slutty costumes and worship the dead in the comfort of my own home, it seems silly to limit myself to one day a year. 4’th of July is a farce. Easter can’t decide whether it’s a Christian celebration of Jesus becoming a zombie or a pagan celebration of orgasms and…rabbits? Maybe I’m an old washed-up Scrooge who needs to smoke less and breathe more fresh air, but 4/20 is my…

A Republican North Carolina lawmaker and a bipartisan group of cosponsors have filed a bill to create a $5 million grant program to support research into the therapeutic potential of psilocybin and MDMA and to create a Breakthrough Therapies Research Advisory Board to oversee the effort. Colorado’s Senate president has filed a bill to enact regulations for the possession, cultivation and use of certain psychedelics for personal, therapeutic and spiritual purposes—giving a preview of the policy landscape that may emerge following voter approval of a legalization ballot initiative last year. The legislation seeks to set rules on “healing centers” where adults 21 and older could receive psychedelic treatment, tighten up policies on cultivation and facilitators, establish licensing requirements, dictate state agency regulatory responsibilities and impose penalties for unsanctioned activities. While possession, cultivation and sharing certain entheogenic substances became legal for adults after Gov. Jared Polis (D)…

A new congressional bill to allow marijuana businesses to take federal tax deductions that are available to other industries would actually result in the government bringing in more revenue, the House sponsor said on the eve of the cannabis holiday 4/20. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), founder of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, spoke about his recently refiled tax legislation, as well as the prospects of interstate marijuana commerce and the tension between efforts to enact reform incrementally and comprehensively, during a press briefing on Wednesday.
