Editor’s note: This editorial was contributed by Frederika McClary Easley, Director of Strategic Initiatives at The People’s Ecosystem, with market research assistance provided by Alec Estevez. When states regulate adult-use cannabis consumption, the feeling of many is that the work is over and the floodgates for cannabis will be opened. There are ideas and dreams of being able to purchase plant medicine with the same ease that one can purchase a cup of coffee or tea. The reality is that in many places, that dream has not and will not be realized, and purchasing ease will remain aspirational. In many…
According to an Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) poll released on Tuesday, 65% of U.S. voters support allowing cannabis businesses to have access to financial services in states where cannabis is legal. The poll was commissioned by Morning Consult. The poll found that 71% of respondents agree that allowing cannabis businesses to access baking services would help reduce the risk of robbery and assault at the businesses. Another 55% said that with some cannabis-related businesses owned and led by people of color, women, and the LGBTQ community, allowing for cannabis banking would help these underserved communities. In a…
Las Vegas, October 17, 2022 – Native Leaf Co launched its new line of hemp leaf wraps handpicked from the cannabis plant – becoming the first and only company to offer a natural hemp wrap from cured hemp leaves. Accessing these types of hemp leaves, known as fan leaves, has always been difficult for the everyday cannabis enthusiast as it involves growing the plant themselves – making it inaccessible for most. Creating wraps from fan leaves, which are typically discarded, makes the process completely sustainable. All of Native Leaf Co’s leaves undergo rigorous quality control testing, with each leaf inspected…
The top federal employment agency is proposing to revise questions that job applicants must face about past marijuana use “in recognition of changing societal norms” as more states move to legalize cannabis. The move, it says, “may improve the pool of applicants for federal employee and federal contractor positions.” In a notice set to be published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) says it’s hoping to consolidate various forms that applicants for federal positions must fill out into a new unified Personnel Vetting Questionnaire (PVQ) that includes refined marijuana questions. “The proposed information collection…
Most Americans don’t think marijuana is dangerous despite efforts by legalization opponents to cast the plant in a negative light, according to a new poll. Rasmussen Reports surveyed 1,000 Americans to learn about their views about drug misuse in the U.S., the perceived dangerousness of cannabis and the idea that marijuana is a gateway to “more dangerous drugs.” While 59 percent of respondents said that drug misuse in general is getting “worse” in the country— compared to just nine percent who said the health issue is improving—a majority of Americans also said that marijuana is either “not very dangerous” (28…
The 2023 South by Southwest (SXSW) panel lineup has officially been released, with a number of events focused on drug policy. And notably, next year’s festival will see more psychedelics panels than those centered on marijuana. Both drug-focused topics have their own designated “track” at the Austin-based event, which will take place in March. Several of the cannabis panels will explore the political and business dynamics of the industry and reform movement, while the psychedelics track largely examines the future of the substances as interest in their medical potential continues to expand. “We’re excited to host so many innovative thinkers…
High Times will bring together buds, business, and bowling at this year’s Biz Bash 4.0, an official after-party for MJBizCon to be held at the Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas later this month. With a special performance by Redman & Method Man, this year’s event promises a night of music, partying, and fun for those attending the cannabis industry’s biggest trade show. Billed as “the most anticipated after party during MJBizCon week,” the High Times Biz Bash 4.0 is sponsored by Zig-Zag, the iconic rolling paper brand that has helped stoners stay high for decades. The event will feature a…
On December 24, 2008, a delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department announcing that their people were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties signed with the US. No longer would they tolerate the federal government’s gross violations of these agreements; America was put on notice that the Republic of Lakotah had been re-created. The new nation would issue its own passports and driving licenses, and living there would be tax-free-provided residents renounced their US citizenship. As has been the case for the past 40 years, Russell Means, the longtime Indian-rights activist, was there, helping see the declaration through…
In a case sure to reverberate around the world, the Argentinian Supreme Court has ruled that parents of sick children are allowed to grow their own cannabis to treat their children. This decision, they ruled, is in line with existing Argentine law—namely the decriminalization of cannabis for medical purposes. As family law and cannabis legitimization intersect, this development is about as significant as a similar 2014 Israeli case. Namely, families of sick children requiring medical cannabis threatened to immigrate to Colorado unless they were given the right to obtain medical cannabis domestically. The government changed the law within a matter…
